Richard Stampton Architects Phillip Island House
Only a single façade of Richard Stampton’s Phillip Island House is visible from the street - and, even then, only just. In large part it is obscured by a thicket of she-oak, cushion bush, coastal banksia, and blackwood. With a slight rotation on the site, the house turns away from the street, as if shy or perhaps preoccupied. This front façade is short and blank - an emptiness that almost approaches abstraction and makes no concessions to disclosing the interior. It is only after passing through the thick vegetation, once the long façade becomes visible, that hints of an internal life are revealed. A heavy door and unassuming light fixture indicate the entry, and large windows provide occasional glimpses within.
